Buck Lim)

The Simanggang Government Chinese School In Rajah's time-
St. Luke's, the first traditional school in Simanggang was established in 1863 by the Anglican Church at Sabu, where St. Lawrence's is at present. It was, then, moved to the present site in 1931.

The Simanggang Chinese Bazaar found its exciting in 1864,same year with Fort Alice, but for the next 50 years, the Chinese community never had a proper Chinese institution for their children. For those who could afford it, private teacher was employed to teach at home or they sent their children home to China to study.
05/07/1911
In a gathering, Rajah Charles told the Malay and Chinese that the government planned to establish vernacular schools for their children in Simanggang and lessons to be conducted including teaching of mother tongue,English and arithmetic.
19/09/1911
A Government Chinese School, situated at where the old wooden wharf now is, opened with 10 boys. Two days later, at the site where Sekolah Abang Aing now is, the Government Malay School was also opened with 17 boys on the roll.
From then on, senior government officers, including the Rajah himself, paid regular visits to these schools:
18/08/1912
Rajah Charles visited the Government Chinese School and the Resident, A. R. Ward, made a brief report—among other things, school exam on 06/09/1912 and school holidays on 09/09/1912 for a month long.
06/09/1913
School's progress as a whole and students' personal health care by the Resident at the Government Chinese School and all found to be satisfactory.
13/05/14
Rajah Charles had a surprised visit to the Government Chinese School during which he had, one by one, questioned and answered with all the boys in the school. Response by the boys, 20 of them, were good.
In 1929, the Chinese community took over the management of the Government Chinese School under a new name,"Pei Qiao(培侨)School"
