This old picture was taken in 1953 during which a big function was being held in town—Simanggang Regatta, of course!
Did you notice, in the picture, just below Fort Alice, that there is a bridge over a river which does not exist anymore at present ?
Sungei Ta-i, it was !
In olden days, human excrement was manually c...ollected from every shop-house and poured it into this river. The pouring place was some where at the public toilet we have today.
In the early years of our time, we children liked to swim and play in Sungei Stawang , sometime in Sungei Simanggang but never in Sungei Ta-i, simply because there was “ta-i” in it.
